POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

CAPITAL HABEAS UNIT - INVESTIGATOR/MITIGATION SPECIALIST


The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of Florida is now accepting applications for an Investigator/Mitigation Specialist in the Capital Habeas Unit of our office, located in Tallahassee, Florida. The unit directly represents death-sentenced prisoners in federal habeas corpus proceedings, and trains and assists non-office lawyers and investigators representing death-sentenced prisoners. Investigators/Mitigation Specialists play a key role in our efforts on behalf of our clients. Working well with others; gathering information; and collecting, outlining, and summarizing voluminous documents are critical. The position encompasses paralegal responsibilities.

This will be an adventure. We are a new and developing capital habeas unit facing unique challenges. While this is not a staff attorney position, law school graduates are encouraged to apply. Capital defense experience, criminal defense experience, and/or major civil litigation experience are helpful. Knowledge or experience in the mental health or social work fields is especially helpful. Applicants should possess computer skills, strong oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, the ability to work well with others in a team-based approach, and the willingness to take direction from the Unit chief and attorneys within the Unit. The willingness to engage in extensive travel is required. A valid driver’s license is necessary. Residence in the general area of Tallahassee, Florida, will be required. In the end, empathy and dedication to the cause of our clients are essential traits. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not required.
