The Federal Public Defender, Southern District of Ohio, is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Federal Public Defender to be stationed in the Columbus, OH office. The federal defender organization operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 USC §3006A, to provide representation in federal criminal matters in the federal courts.

Job Description: The Assistant Federal Defender provides zealous, professional legal representation to clients charged with federal criminals offenses. Responsibilities include managing an extensive caseload with cases at varying stages of litigation; preparing pleadings, briefs and motions; developing litigation strategies; meeting with clients, experts, witnesses and family members;  appearing on behalf of clients in court; and other duties as assigned.

Requirements and Qualifications: The successful applicant must be a graduate from an accredited law school, a member in good standing of the bar of any state or territory. Ohio bar license recommended but not required. Must have 5-10 years of experience defending criminal cases with a significant amount occurring in federal courts. Trial experience, excellent research, writing and oral advocacy skills are required.  The applicant must be able to immediately assume an active caseload, work in a team environment, communicate effectively, exhibit effective organizational skill and set priorities. Fluency in Spanish is a plus. Federal Public Defender attorneys may not engage in the private practice of law.

Salary and Benefits. Starting salary will be commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the applicant. This position is excepted service and does not carry the tenure rights of the competitive Civil Service. The position does offer federal government employment benefits including health and life insurance, retirement and the Thrift Savings Plan.  Salary is payable only by Electronic Funds Transfer (direct deposit). Employment will be considered provisional pending the successful outcome of a background check, including FBI fingerprint check and IRS “tax check.”
