The Federal Community Defender of the Eastern District of Michigan (FCDEDM) is now accepting applications for the positions of Assistant Federal Defender and Research & Writing Specialist at our Detroit location. The FCDEDM provides court-appointed representation to indigent defendants unable to afford counsel in the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern District of Michigan in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, Bay City and Port Huron, Michigan.
ASSISTANT FEDERAL DEFENDER. Must be a law school graduate, a member in good standing of any state bar, and licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeal. The successful applicant must have sufficient experience to immediately defend serious criminal cases in federal court, from arraignment through appeal. Minimum of three years criminal trial experience required (preferably federal), as well as strong research and writing skills, in-depth knowledge of criminal law and procedure, and a commitment to the representation of those unable to afford counsel. Salary negotiable, DOE, and is comparable to salaries paid by U.S. Attorney’s Office.
RESEARCH AND WRITING SPECIALIST. Provides research and support services to staff attorneys, including assisting with briefs, motions, trial and legal memoranda. The position requires excellent research and writing skills, proficiency in computer-assisted legal research, word processing capability, and the ability to understand and manage complex factual and legal issues. Candidate must be a law school graduate and a member in good standing of any state bar. Salary negotiable, DOE, and is comparable to salaries paid by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
