The Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of North Carolina is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Federal Public Defender. The Federal Public Defender operates under the authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, to provide defense services to indigent persons in federal criminal cases and related matters in the federal courts.
Minimum qualifications include graduation from an accredited law school, membership in good standing with a state bar and at least three years experience in the area of criminal law. Experience with federal criminal law and procedure, federal civil commitment law, and federal sentencing guidelines are strongly preferred. Candidates must have excellent courtroom skills plus strong research and writing ability.
The position requires extensive travel throughout the Eastern District of North Carolina.
This is a full-time position with federal salary and benefits based upon qualifications and experience. Assistant Federal Public Defenders may not engage in the private practice of law. All employees are subject to mandatory electronic fund transfer (direct deposit) of net pay. The successful candidate will be subject to a background check as a condition of employment.
