The Office of the Federal Defender for the Eastern District of California (FD-CAE) is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Federal Defender for its Fresno Office. The Office of the Federal Defender operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, to provide legal representation in federal criminal cases and related matters in the federal courts.
An Assistant Federal Defender provides zealous, professional legal representation to indigent persons charged with criminal offenses in the United States District Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Responsibilities include managing an extensive caseload with cases at varying stages of litigation; preparing pleadings, briefs, and motions; appearing on behalf of clients in court hearings and at other related proceedings; reviewing various documents; developing litigation strategies; meeting with clients, experts, witnesses, family members, and others. Travel to other courts within the District may be required.
All applicants must either be admitted to the State Bar of California or be a member in good standing of another state's bar and be willing to take the California Bar examination; if hired, applicant will be expected, as a condition of further employment, to be admitted to practice in California within two years of starting FD-CAE employment. Applicants must have strong writing and advocacy skills, the ability to work in a team environment, and must possess effective organizational skills and the ability to set priorities. At least 5 years or more trial level experience required, preferably in criminal law. Please describe motion, trial and appellate experience. Indicate any other than English language proficiencies. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident applying for U.S. citizenship. Selected candidate will be subject to a background check as an employment condition.
This position is a full-time permanent position with federal salary based on qualifications and experience. Direct deposit of pay required. Employees of the Federal Defender are considered “at-will” employees and are not covered by the Civil Service Reform Act.
