ASSISTANT FEDERAL PUBLIC DEFENDER

The Federal Public Defender for the Western District of New York is now accepting applications for a Full Time Assistant Federal Public Defender position in the Buffalo office.
This Assistant Federal Public Defender will represent clients before the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Responsibilities include preparing the record on appeal, brief and motion writing and oral argument before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. The successful candidate will also support Assistant Federal Public Defenders in the Trial Unit by preparing pretrial motions, legal memoranda, including sentencing memoranda, examining and analyzing discovery, performing legal research and assisting with other all aspects of case preparation. A candidate with appropriate experience may even handle some representations in the District Court but would primarily work in the Appeals Unit.
All applicants must either be admitted to the State Bar of New York or be a member in good standing of another state bar. Applicants must have strong writing and advocacy skills, the ability to work in a team environment, and a demonstrated commitment to criminal defense. Computer proficiency is required, as is familiarity with computer-assisted legal research and effective written communication skills.
This is a full-time position that precludes the private practice of law. Employees are considered at-will and are not covered by the Civil Service Reform Act. A final offer of employment is subject to a satisfactory background investigation including name, fingerprint and IRS tax check.
