The Federal Public Defender, Middle District of Tennessee, Capital Habeas Unit, is accepting applications for the position of Research and Writing Specialist. The Unit represents death-sentenced prisoners in federal habeas corpus litigation proceedings in the Middle and Western Districts of Tennessee. This position is located in Nashville. This is a temporary position for one year and a day, with the possibility of one extension.

POSITION OVERVIEW AND QUALIFICATIONS

The FPD Capital Habeas Unit is team-oriented, client-centered, and values diversity. This attorney position provides advanced legal research and writing services. Under the direction of an assistant federal public defender, the specialist will review and analyze capital state post-conviction files. Applicants must be: (1) a graduate of an accredited law school, and admitted to practice in good standing before the highest court of a state; (2) licensed to practice in the U.S. District Court by the time of entrance on duty.

It is preferred that applicants have experience in one or more of the following areas: criminal law, capital litigation, federal habeas corpus litigation, federal appellate procedure, or complex federal court civil litigation. Other related experience may be considered. Finally, applicants should be team-oriented, yet able to work independently, and have a demonstrated interest in the defense of the indigent accused.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

This position is full-time with federal salary and benefits. Employees of the Federal Public Defender are members of the judicial branch of the United States Government. They are considered at-will employees and are not covered by the Civil Service Reform Act. Salary is payable only by Electronic Funds Transfer (direct deposit).
